Do you need air gap for reverse osmosis?

Generally, Reverse Osmosis systems come standard with an air gap faucet, but many RO system manufacturers will also offer the non-air gap option. Air gap faucets dispense water just like standard non-air gap faucets, but have an air gap built into the base of the faucet.

Is an air gap faucet necessary?





Most plumbing codes require an air gap on the RO drain line to prevent the possibility of contamination. Since RO systems must dispense water through their own faucet, many opt for an air gap faucet that incorporates the air gap inside the body of the faucet itself.

Can I use a regular faucet with reverse osmosis?

You can use that hole for the RO faucet if you have enough clearance from the regular faucet. If the soap dispenser or spray hose holes are not in daily use, those can potentially be used for the RO faucet. The RO faucet requires a hole size on the sink (or countertop) that is at least 7/16” in diameter.
