Can you add a socket to a ring main?

The easiest way of connecting into a ring circuit is to run a spur cable from the terminals of an existing socket – but you can’t connect it to any socket. The IEE Wiring Regulations are very specific about this. You mustn’t run a spur from a socket that’s already on a spur, or that already supplies a spur.

How many sockets can you have on a ring UK?

The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) permit an unlimited number of 13A socket outlets (at any point unfused single or double, or any number fused) to be installed on a ring circuit, provided that the floor area served does not exceed 100 m2.

How many sockets can you add to a ring main?

There is no limit to the number of sockets you can have on a ring main but there is a limit to the number of spurs you can have from those sockets or from the wiring between them. If you would like to know how to add a spur to an existing ring main, see our project on adding an extra socket.

Can you Spur 2 sockets off a ring main?

A spur can be connected to an existing socket, on either a ring main or a radial circuit, providing that socket does not already have a spur. That is only one spur per socket is allowed and the number of spurs must not exceed the number of sockets.

How many sockets can you spur off a ring?

You can have one unfused spur per socket-outlet on a ring main or one fused spur per socket-outlet, you can have as many sockets as you like off of a fused spur.

Can you extend a ring circuit?

There are two ways of extending a ring circuit, either extending it by adding junction boxes or by using existing sockets. When extending a ring circuit, planning is essential.

How do I add more sockets to my ring main?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: You are not putting the socket in yet. It is important to connect these up together and the reason for that is is because it is a ring circuit. And if you don't connect these cables.

How many sockets can you run on a 32A ring main?

You can only have a maximum of 4 sockets for a 32a ring.

Can I put 2 double sockets on a spur?

you can have maximum one double socket as a normal spur but if you are going from socket to FCU fused at 13 amp from there you can add as many sockets as you wish as all the sockets and cable will be protected by the fuse so no chance of overloading the cable the fuse will blow first.

Can I use a junction box to extend a ring main?

Effectively you cut the wire on the ring feeding a new wire to socket via a juction box, then feed a wire from socket back to the other wire on the ring via a juntion box. Extending the ring gives you the option to extend in the future.

Is extending a ring main notifiable?

extending an existing ring main is considered minor work and a minor works certs is all that required. installing sockets to external building is notifiable.

How many sockets can a spur have UK?

one spur

How Many Sockets Can Be on a Spur? Only one spur can be connected to a single socket.

Is it OK to spur off a spur?

The reason for not running two spurs from the same spur “point” is that it can lead to possible overloads in that one leg of the final can become unbalanced and exceed the max.

Can you spur off a ring main in 1.5 mm?

no because you will have a 32 amp mcb protecting a 1.5mm2 cable.

How do you tell if a socket is on a ring main?

The first image is how the back of your double socket should look and the second is the wiring for a spur. A general rule for a ring main is that if you only have two cables in the back of an existing socket then it is ok to spur.

Why are sockets wired in a ring?

The power sockets in a house are connected by means of a ring circuit. In a ring circuit the live, neutral and earth wires form a loop of cable going from the consumer unit to all of the sockets in turn and then back to the consumer unit. The live wire carries current to the house/appliance at a high voltage.

How do you wire a ring main UK?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: So your neutral would come from the consumer unit into your first socket. And then from there to the second socket. And from there to the third one.

How many radial sockets does a ring main have?

So if you have 5 sockets connected in a Ring configuration, you can have one spurred socket off each of those five – Only ONE per Ring socket. so this equals 5 spurred sockets maximum.
