Do you need to attach ground wire to light switch?

It is perfectly legal to wire a light switch without the inclusion of a ground. Dimmers will require a ground wire but traditional toggle-type switches will not. Omitting a ground wire on any switch is not recommended.

Can a ground wire be added?

Yes, now you can simply run bare or green wire between all your electrical boxes and back to the panel. The ground wires can follow any feasible route, they don’t need to travel with the conductors.

Where do I put the ground wire on a light switch?

What if a light switch isn’t grounded?

In many cases, especially in older houses with metal boxes, the metal box may be grounded even if you don’t have the wire. When you screw the light switch in, it will make contact with the box, and as long as the box is grounded, it will pick up ground that way. If the box isn’t grounded, the switch will still work.

What happens if you don’t connect the ground wire?

Don’t ground to the electrical box. Connecting the ground wire to a metal electrical box will energize the box in the event of a short circuit. The box could overheat and start a fire, or someone could get a shock from touching it.
