- Turn off the power at the breaker.
- Rip the wall open.
- Pull out the devices from the boxes and label the wires of the devices.
- Remove the devices.
- Unclamp the cables and pull them back.
- Pry off the boxes.
- Place new boxes.
- Insert and clamp the cables.
How do I get my outlets to sit flush?
The good news is, there’s a quick an easy fix to this problem! Add what’s called a Goof Ring to your electrical box. It’s a cheap plastic sleeve that slides into your electric box. It rests between your electrical box and device and the front tabs sit on your outermost surface.

Which way should a plug face?
The National Electrical Code (NEC) doesn’t require a certain direction. The NEC allows outlets to be installed with the ground plug hole facing up, down or sideways. It’s up to you, there is no standard electric outlet orientation. So that means there really is no such thing as upside down outlets.

The outlet should be oriented with the ground pin up because if the plug comes slightly loose and a metal object were to fall from above, the ground plug, which usually does not carry current, would deflect the object so that it would not hit is live prongs.

Can I screw electrical box to a stud?
A better solution is to get a box similar to the one below with side screws already included to be mounted to the stud. This is the same size as the old work box but allows you to screw directly into the stud. Thanks JACK. That works too.

Can a junction box be hidden behind a wall?
It is against most building codes to bury a junction box in the wall. In addition to being dangerous, doing so is also impractical. If an electrician needed to access the junction box, she would need to cut a hole in the wall.
How many junction boxes can you have on one circuit?
There are no limits on the number of junction boxes (without devices) in any particular circuit.
