Is there a PEX Union?

PEX Connectors and Fittings

PEX fittings form mechanical unions; they are not solvent-glued in the same manner as is used for CPVC and other plastic plumbing pipes. There are several manufacturers of PEX tubing, and each offers their own complete line of fittings.

Can PEX A be crimped?

This is our recommended method to transition: using a PEX-B insert-style fitting for both the PEX-A and PEX-B pipes. This method is quite simple. Since both sides of the transition will be insert-style, all you will need are crimp rings and a crimp tool.

Are PEX connections reliable?

Most PEX pipes are reliable pipes. However, one brand in particular has routinely failed – Dura PEX piping, manufactured by CPI (bought out by NIBCO). Dura Pex (by CPI) is prone to cracking and probably has already caused you a lot of headaches (and bills for pipe fixes).

Why is there a shortage of PEX fittings?

The pandemic has led to production stoppage, shortage of workers, and disruption of logistics in several PEX producing countries.

Is it better to crimp or expand PEX?

PEX crimp equipment is a lot more affordable than the expansion kits. However, despite the pricing and form shortcomings, most plumbers prefer to work with expansion because installation is more efficient. There are fewer leaks, and it also seems to be more durable against extreme colds and frozen pipes, etc.

Why are PEX crimp rings black?

The black coating is not a paint but a surface treatment which does not add to the dimensions of the ring. Brass Insert Fittings and rings are manufactured and certified to the requirements of ASTM F1807 to insure compatibility with all SDR9 PEX tubing and fitting components from numerous manufacturers.

Should I use brass or plastic PEX fittings?

Brass its typically the best choice when the application demands a stronger fitting. In addition, plastic PEX fittings have a thicker wall requirement under ASTM2159 Standard, resulting in a reduced ID which restricts flow, while brass PEX fittings are manufactured to ASTM F1807 allowing for a larger flow passage.

Do PEX clamps fail?

Also, the clamp rings can be susceptible to corrosion. If they fail at any point, there will be a catastrophic failure.

What is the lifespan of PEX pipe?

30 to 50 years

While you can expect PEX to last for 30 to 50 years, copper piping will outdo it by about two decades, with a typical lifespan of 50 to 70 years. Copper is a more durable option that isn’t susceptible to rodents or sunlight. These pipes can easily handle water pressure of up to 1,000 psi.

What happens if PEX crimp is too tight?

PEX installation seems so easy that it is hard to focus on small details. Improper crimps rarely leak short-term. Often, it takes a few years for leaks to develop. Unfortunately, if crooked, too tight or too loose rings cause leaks, the whole house might have to be re-piped to make it safe.

Does PEX get brittle over time?

Like most other plastics, PEX will become brittle if exposed to sunlight for too long and may crack under pressure. Typical exposure limit is ~30 days.

Will PEX last 100 years?

Additionally, long-term testing programs on PEX have shown that it has a potential lifespan of more than 100 years. So, while copper systems may have to be re-piped every few years or decades due to corrosion and pinhole leaks, a PEX system can last 10 times longer — or more.

When should you not use PEX pipe?

PEX plumbing is fine inside the walls of a home, no matter the temperatures as it can be covered with insulation. However, one of the disadvantages of PEX plumbing is it cannot be used outdoors in cold climates as there is no way to cover them and protect them from freezing temperatures.
