You can run a single cat6 cable from the modem to a more convenient location and then put a simple network switch or (wireless) router to ‘split’ the cable into 4 or more ports. If you already have a router, you’ll want to configure a new router as an access point (essentially assign static IP and turn off DHCP).

Can you move a fiber optic modem?

No unfortunately moving the ONT and its delicate fibre cabling is likely to cause damage to the equipment or fibre strands, and can stop your broadband service from working.

  1. close to a power socket (the ONT is powered by a 12v adapter)
  2. where you’re using the internet the most.
  3. centrally located in your home if possible as that’s how your wifi works best.
  4. close to data-hungry devices like televisions, stereos and home servers.

Routers tend to spread signals downward, so it’s best to mount the router as high as possible to maximize coverage. Try placing it high on a bookshelf or mounting it on the wall in an inconspicuous place.

Does it matter where I put my modem?

Choose a central location in your home, and up off of the floor. This brings your devices closer to your router when trying to connect. Keep your modem router visible and out in the open. Don’t put it inside or behind cabinets or furniture, and make sure the modem router vents are not blocked to prevent overheating.
