What fitting is required to connect a p-trap to a drain?

As a rule of thumb, you will always need a tailpiece to connect a kitchen P-trap to the wall drain. To install it, slip the tailpiece washer into the flared end of the pipe and attach it to the sink strainer with the slip nut.

Do Fernco couplings meet code?

It is my understanding that flexible PVC couplings (e.g. Fernco) meet the definition of Mechanical Joint in the international residential code. The 2015 IRC prohibits the use of Mechanical Joints on PVC couplings above ground “unless otherwise approved”.

Where can you use Fernco coupling?

Fernco pipe couplings and adapters are used for all types of in-house and sewer connections: drain, waste, vent piping, house-to-main, repairs, cut- ins, conductor, roof drains and increasers-reducers. Manufacturing thousands of different flexible coupling types, Fernco has the right solution for most applications.

How do you attach p-trap to PVC pipe?

Quote from the video:
To begin measure and cut the wall tube to the length required. Next position the nuts and washer on the wall tube insert wall tube into waste connector and tighten the existing nut.

Does it matter which way the P-trap goes?

The outlet end of the trap pipe should be lower than the inlet when installed properly. The example shown has it backward, which creates a trap seal more than 4” and makes the drain more likely to clog—and that’s a long explanation for why a backwards trap is a bad thing.

What does P-trap connect to?

In a nutshell, a p-trap is a u-shaped bend in the waste pipe that connects a sink’s drain to a home septic tank or to a municipal sewer system.

How does P-trap connect to wall?

The P trap is curved into a loop, or J bend, that retains a small amount of water as a seal. The P trap connects to a horizontal pipe that connects to the drain pipe in the wall. Drain pipes under and connecting to a sink can rust, break or simply get bumped and loosened when moving things in and out from underneath.

How do I keep my P-trap from drying out?

P-traps can dry out as quickly as a month, sometimes even less than that. This happens most often in winter. To prevent your P-trap from drying out, run the sink or shower for a minute or two once a week to keep water flowing and your P-traps from drying out.

Does P-trap need to be below drain?

It is not ideal to have the p-trap below the the exit drain because water gravity has to force the water out instead of it flowing downwards naturally. They both work and have seen it many times. But essentially anything below already creates its own p-trap- so using another is redundant.

How far can the P-trap be from the drain?

According to the International Residential Code, the maximum vertical distance between the sink drain and the entrance to the p-trap is 24 inches.

How far should vent be from P-trap?

trap, the distance from the weir of the trap to the vent pipe opening “shall not” exceed 30 inches.

How far below the garbage disposal should the P-trap be?

A trap is measured from the top of the trap bend, to the trap weir. This depth should be between 2 – 4″ (according to plumbing codes), to maintain a proper trap. You’ll notice that your trap depth is much more than that, and includes your garbage disposal.

What size should a P-trap drain pipe be?

Kitchen sink P-Traps come in 1-1/2” standard size, while bathroom sinks use P-Traps of 1-1/4” standard size. The traps also come in different material types such as propylene, ABS, brass (chrome-plated or natural), and PVC.

How do I know what size P-trap I need?

If you have 2.5 inches from the bottom of the tailpiece to shelf and 0.5 inches from the drain to shelf you can use CP-trap. First you have to cut 2.5-2.0 inches from the end of the tailpiece. The height of the p-trap is 4.5 inches 5-2.5=2.5 inches or 4.5-2.5=2.0 inches.
