Do I tile ceiling or walls first?

If you don’t it looks like crap – that simple. When installing tile on the ceiling you want to install the tile on the shower walls all the way up to the last row before the ceiling – as I’ve done in these photos.

It’s always advisable to start tiling your grid in the centre of the wall, as it’s easier to make sure your pattern is symmetrical. It also means any half-tiles you may need can go at the end of each row and will be of matching size.

Where do you start tiling a ceiling?

Place the tile in one of the corners that your perpendicular lines created in the centre of the ceiling. Move the tile back and front so that the mortar adheres to the ceiling. To keep the tile in place, hold it there with some painter’s tape. Don’t tape in the direction of your tiling.

If your bathroom tends to get humid or you are installing a steam shower, you should tile the ceiling to help protect it from moisture. Otherwise, the best time to install tile on the ceiling is if you are doing an accent wall in the shower, and want to extend the tile overhead.

When tiling a sloped or curved ceiling, begin at the lowest points and tile toward the highest point. Use spacers as needed to keep the tiles from sliding, which can break the surface tension and cause the tiles to fall.

Most of the tiles will need to be cut to fit the perimeter of the room; starting in a corner allows you to begin the pattern with full tiles on a straight line and move evenly into the room. In this case, beginning in the center may make it more difficult to get the pattern moving evenly.

How far up should you tile a bathroom wall?

The classic design feature is usually between 34 and 54″ high, with 36″ being the average height. A classic offset or straight set pattern in a standard field size tile works best for this wall height. For a truly classic look, finish the top with a decorative trim or a bullnosed edge.

How far above the shower head should the tile go?



Tiles should cover ¾ of the bathroom walls depending on the bathroom wall height and 4-6” above the showerhead.

How high do you tile a shower wall?

Shower tiles should generally be approximately six feet and two inches high in the shower. This height covers the minimum of three-fourths of the shower to keep water flowing into the drain and not seeping into the walls.

Where do you stop tile in a shower?

Usually there is a logical place to end the tile, either at the top row of tile, or, at the top of someone’s budget! As long as the wall is protected from water below the showerhead and around a splashing bather, you’re fine functionally.

The bathroom fitters are unanimous—if you’re looking for a high quality finish, with a better seal against water damage, then always tile the floor first.

Should tile be at the top or bottom of a shower wall?

The goal is to maximize the size of tiles at the bottom and top, avoiding narrow pieces. I avoid using a full piece at the top because the ceiling is usually not perfectly level. By cutting the top course of tile on all three walls, I can keep the joint width consistent all the way around.

Is it OK to tile from the top down?

When tiling the wall around a bath, start from the bottom and then move towards the top. Cut tiles will be less visible at the top. Also, if you start tiling from the top of the wall, tiles may slip and fall because of the weight. If you don’t tile from floor to the ceiling, it is easy to end with a full tile.

Do you overlap tiles corners?



Tile corners should overlap. You want them close enough to each other that there isn’t a huge space in the corner. So leave only enough room to squeeze them in next to each other. If there is a small gap, your corner bead will hide it.
