Sometimes, central HVAC systems are broken up into multiple zones (through duplication of heat sources, or usage of dampers and ducts). Each of those circuits will require their own dedicated thermostat. If this is the case, we’d recommend a separate smart thermostat for each zone.

A zone valve can be located right after the boiler and circulator (hot side), or at the end of the zone circuit (cold side). If able, it is recommended to locate the valve on the cold side as it will be less damaging to the valve and improve its life-time.
Should circulating pump be on flow or return?
The best place for the pump(s) is still on the flow side. This keeps the bulk of the system under positive pressure from a combination of the pressure imposed by the system water connection, and then when the pump is running, the pressure provided by the pump.

Where should a circulation pump be placed?
If you had a circulation pump you would position it on the right side so it also points left (same direction as the filter). Positioning it anywhere else or in some cases the opposite end, will cause negative flow and effectively stop most of the circulation.
