iso valves have compression both ends. so can be put in the middle of a section of pipe. service valves have compression one end and thread the other so can screwed onto a ball valve, or tap etc.

Can you replace the screw in an isolation valve?
Yes. Sometimes it’s not practical to re-new nut and olive…for a few reasons, but until you swap, you won’t know. In which case, you still have the new nut and olive. Isolation valves usually either seize up, leak from around the screw head or get butchered but for about £1 a pop, are cheap to replace.

Be careful not too tighten the nuts too much to begin with. Tighten to the point their tight and then give one final pinch. If once you turn the water back on you have no leaks, great, all done! If you find that you do, you then have some margin to tighten further.
