If you haven’t already, go to nest.com/works and enter your thermostat’s wires into the compatibility checker. If your system is compatible, you’ll get a custom wiring diagram that you will need to install your Nest Thermostat.

What wiring is needed for a Nest Thermostat?

With a Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat, you’ll need to install a C wire if the thermostat has power issues or its battery often drains.

Why is my wiring not compatible with Nest?

If there is more than one large strand, the wiring isn’t Nest-compatible. When you’re done, reinsert it into the correct connector. Note: If your wires are stranded, you may be able to contact a local pro to cap, solder or replace stranded wires with a solid core wire, which will work with the Nest thermostat.

How do I know if my HVAC system is compatible with Nest?

Can I replace my thermostat with a Nest?

In most homes, installing a Google Nest thermostat is an easy DIY project that takes about 20-30 min. The Nest app’s step-by-step instructions make it easy to install and wire your thermostat, so use it as your main guide.

Does Nest work with 4 wires?

Does a Nest require AC wire?

In a system with a C-wire, the Nest charges itself from the C-wire’s current and all is fine. In a system without a C-wire, though, Nest recharges its battery when the heating or cooling runs. It diverts a little bit of the power to itself and charges its own battery.

What color is the OB wire on a thermostat?

It’s usually blue, but it may also be black, brown or purple. The O or orange wire connects to your heat pump (if applicable).

Is RC wire same as C wire?

Typically, the wires that provide the power (often called the “hot” wires) are labeled Rc (cooling) and Rh (heating). They provide a source of 24V power coming from the HVAC control board. Sometimes they are separate wires and require separate connections. Other times they are the same wire.

Does Nest work with 2 wire system?

The Nest Thermostat is compatible with 2 wire low voltage HVAC systems that are either heat only systems or cooling only systems.

Do I use RH or RC on Nest thermostat?

The Nest Thermostat E only has an R connector, which is typically where an R wire would go. If you have separate heating and air conditioning systems, you might have separate Rh and Rc wires that come out of the wall and are connected to your system.

Does the red wire go to RC or RH?

There is no standard for the colour of the RH wire, but most units use a red one. The RC wire, on the other hand, refers to “red cooling”. It’s the same with the RH wire in that it powers the thermostat. For the RC, it powers the cooling system.

Are R and RH wires the same?

R , Rh , and Rc are all the same, but not. In general terms, the R terminal is where you connect the signal voltage source. In low voltage controlled systems, there will be a step down transformer that provides the power to the control circuitry.

Do I need a jumper from RC to RH?

Effectively there isn’t a second RH wire, although there is an RH terminal. However, the heating still needs to be controlled, so a wire known as a jumper is connected between the RC and the RH terminals so that power gets to the heating control part of the thermostat. This wire is also known as the RH wire.
