To the best of our knowledge, there are no state building codes that require hard-wire interconnect for your smoke and CO alarms. However, you should always check your local fire safety codes. They can vary from city to city or even home to home.

Do Carbon monoxide alarms need to be interlinked?

Check the manufacturers guidance on each alarm for instructions on where the alarm should be placed. If you have a carbon-fuelled appliance, like a boiler, fire, non-electric heater or flue you must also have a carbon monoxide detector. This does not need to be linked to the fire alarms.

Do CO alarms need to be hardwired?

Carbon monoxide alarms are required as follows:

Detectors must be hardwired and interconnected with battery backup. (May be separately wired from the existing smoke detection system.)

Do smoke detectors need to be daisy chained?

Residential smoke alarms should be wired on a dedicated circuit. It’s a good idea to have at least one light or receptacle-on the same circuit, to alert the homeowners in case the circuit breaker ever trips. Interconnected alarms are usually wired in a daisy chain, using 14-3 or 12-3 cable.

Are all hardwired smoke alarms interconnected?

All modern hardwired First Alert, Onelink, and BRK alarms use the same wiring technology, and can interconnect. It’s also safe to mix and match several types of hardwired detector, like a photoelectric smoke alarm near the kitchen and a heat detector near the garage.

Can you use hard-wired smoke detector with just a battery?

Most fire experts just want working smoke alarms, but hardwired is a great choice in spaces that have wiring. If not, we strongly recommend a battery-only with a built-in 10-year battery.”

Why are some smoke detectors hard-wired?

Hardwired smoke alarms can be interconnected. So if one detector fails, all the other alarms are triggered. In case of fire, the interconnection can save precious moments as the detector sounds the alarm simultaneously with all other alarms connected into it.

Can a wireless smoke detector be interconnected with a hard-wired one?

Place one mains powered Smart RF enabled smoke or heat alarm on the existing hard‑wired network. This will link all other Smart RF alarms or accessories to communicate to hardwire interconnected alarms.

How can I tell if my smoke alarms are interconnected?

You can check to see if your traditional smoke detectors are interconnected by removing the smoke detector and checking to see if it has 3 wires in the back. If the smoke detector has 3 wires and all three wires are connected in the electrical box your smoke detector is most likely interconnected.

Can you mix wired and wireless smoke detectors?

Yes. You can replace a smoke detector with a combination smoke/CO unit. All modern First Alert and BRK alarms use the same wire harness and connector.

Do wireless interconnected smoke detectors meet code?

Like wired smoke detection systems, wireless smoke detectors are code compliant when they meet NFPA standards.

How do you interconnect wireless smoke detectors?

How do I interconnect my smoke alarm battery?

Quote from Youtube video: To start will want to activate alarm number one the battery only smoke and carbon monoxide combination unit to do so you insert the batteries into the battery drawer.

Can battery operated smoke alarms be interconnected?

Battery power enables homeowners to install interconnected alarms without rewiring. Smart touch button quickly and temporarily silences nuisance alarms. Wireless alarm can be installed in a detached workshop or shed.

How do hardwired smoke detectors work?

A hard-wired smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm is connected to other detectors throughout your home. These alarms sound simultaneously, on all levels of your home, when a single unit detects smoke or gas. All the units are wired to a 120-volt household electrical circuit and each have a battery backup.
