If you’ve been worrying about putting poly over shellac, worry no more. First, you’d want to know how shellac compares to polyurethane. Dewaxed shellac is compatible with water-based finishes like polyurethane. To add, it is often used as an “adapter” layer and can go over, or under, water or oil-based poly.

Can you put an oil finish over shellac?

You can apply oil-base varnish (non-poly) over shellac without any problem. And it doesn’t matter if the shellac contains wax or not. The combination of a coat of shellac followed by a few coats of oil-base varnish will produce an attractive and durable natural finish.

Can you put Poly over dewaxed shellac?





Yes, you can poly over shellac. The final coat(s) of shellac needs to be a dewaxed shellac, so you would have to clean yours and then put down another coat or two of dewaxed shellac.

Can you put polyurethane over amber shellac?

Applying polyurethane over amber shellac is not recommended due to the wax qualities of amber shellac. However, with the right process, oil-based polyurethane over amber shellac can still provide a durable finish. Otherwise, you must use dewaxed amber shellac for the two finishes to work together.

How do I protect my shellac finish?

Put a coat or two of a good hard wax on top and you’ll be all set. I cook up my own wax. I make it from carnuba wax with just enough bees wax to make it easier to apply and buff out, mixed with turpentine to keep the concoction soft enough. Wax over shellac is one of my favorite finishes.

How many coats of shellac should I use?



Three to four coats

Three to four coats is generally enough to give the work a fully protective coat. The first coat seals the wood and the second gives it enough body to sand, level and recoat without cutting through these base coats. The first coat can be applied with a rag or a brush, depending on the surface area you want to coat.

Is shellac a good wood sealer?
