Many times this is due to the circuit inside the CFL charging up, even when the bulb is off. This happens many times when the CFL bulb is being controlled by an illuminated wall switch, because the wall switch uses the CFL bulb itself as neutral. When the wall switch is on, the CFL bulb gets full line voltage.

Why does my fluorescent light flicker when I turn it off?

Without a properly operating ballast to limit the light’s current, a fluorescent lamp connected to the electrical source would quickly and uncontrollably increase its current flow—causing the lamp to burning out. This is why a degrading ballast will cause the fluorescent lights to flicker.

Why is my tube light flashing after I turn it off?

This ‘starter’ is disconnected once electric discharge is maintained through the tube. When a starter is old and worn, there may be insufficient discharge current through the tube to keep the gas ionized, which can result in ‘blinking’ at the ends of the tube, as the starter filament is brought in and out of operation.

Which of the following should be done if fluorescent lamp is blinking on and off?

The only way to correct this is to take the old ballast out and replace it with a new one. (See cautions below.) Lamp blinks: This is usually because of a poor connection where the tube fits into its sockets at each end. Take the tube out and clean the pins at each end with fine steel wool.

Why do new fluorescent bulbs flicker?

It is normal for the light in new fluorescent tubes to flicker or appear to swirl in the first 100 hours of operation. If an older tube exhibits these symptoms, turn off the switch, remove the tube, then clean the ends thoroughly. Socket shapes vary, but the tube-removal process is the same.

What is in fluorescent lights?

A fluorescent lamp consists of a glass tube filled with a mixture of argon and mercury vapour. Metal electrodes at each end are coated with an alkaline earth oxide that gives off electrons easily.

Where is the ballast located on a fluorescent light?

Remove the Cover Plate

Locate the wiring cover plate, usually in the center of the fixture. On either side of the cover, there will be tabs that catch in slots in the fixture. Squeeze the sides of the cover inward to slip the tabs out of the slots, and pull the cover down. This will expose the ballast and its wiring.

Can a bad ballast cause flickering?

Signs of Ballast Failure

How do you know your ballast or driver is toast? You don’t. But there is a good chance your ballast could be the cause of your lighting woes if your lights are dim, buzzing, changing colors, or flickering rapidly. You should check all parts of the fixture, including the bulbs.
