Does the trap have to be directly under the drain?

It is not ideal to have the p-trap below the the exit drain because water gravity has to force the water out instead of it flowing downwards naturally. They both work and have seen it many times. But essentially anything below already creates its own p-trap- so using another is redundant.

Do flexible P traps work?

P-traps take on and maintain the shape of a letter p to keep sewer gases out of your house. When you use a flexible p trap, you’re more likely to get the shape wrong, and you’re more likely to accidentally misshape it when you bump the pipe. Can a wye be installed vertically?

Connecting a trap to a vertical drain with a wye fitting and a 45-degree elbow seems like a good idea. But it’s not. Does the P-trap need to be level?



You must install a trap level in relation to its trap seal. If the trap isn?t level, it can be susceptible to back-siphonage.

Does it matter which way the P-trap goes?

In a Shower P-Trap, Can the Lower Curvature Be Backward? When you cement it together, the straighter side of the trap- which is not as curved- should be what the 90 degree piece is glued onto. Then the curved end should be connected to the shower drain. However, gluing the P-trap shouldn’t affect the drainage.

What if new kitchen sink drain doesn’t line up with existing pipes?

In general, if the P-trap doesn’t line up with the drain, you can adjust the length and height of your drainpipes by cutting them or simply slipping them in and out of their fittings.
