What does RC stand for in HVAC?

RC is no different and simply means red cooling. The wire is generally red, although there is no color standardization — but more importantly, the “R” really means that the wire and terminal are hot; it’s a live electrical wire. The RC wire connects to the RC terminal, which controls the cooling system.

Is Rh wire same as R?

Some units don’t have an RH wire, but instead, they have an R wire. An R wire is similar to either the RC or the RH, so if you don’t have an RH wire, the R wire will be in place to control the heating system.

Does R wire go to RH or RC?

An R wire can go into a Nest Learning Thermostat’s Rc or Rh connector. The Nest Thermostat E only has an R connector, which is typically where an R wire would go.

What does R and W mean on thermostat?

W wire – heat. R wire – heat power. W wire – heat.

Should RC and RH be connected?

If you have both an Rh (Red-heat for powering the heating) and an Rc (Red-cool for powering the cooling), then the R wire can be connected to either Rh or Rc. If you only have a single R wire, then it will only have an R connector, which is the connection you’ll use.

What is RC and RH?

Rh stands for Red-Heat and Rc stands for Red-Cool. If you only have a single red wire the jumper between Rh and Rc are required for some heating and cooling hybrid systems depending on your thermostat.

What’s the difference between W1 and W2?

W1 is the classification we use for galvanized steel hose clamps (according to DIN3017) that are used in no-corrosion environments. W2 is the classification for stainless steel hose clamps (combination of AISI430 and zinc plated screw) that can be used in corrosion sensitive environments.

Where does Rh wire go on thermostat?

The Rh wire connects to your heating system as opposed to your cooling system. This wire may be red without an H attached to it, depending on if you have a dual transformer setup. The Rh wire connects to the RH terminal on your thermostat.

What does W1 and W2 mean on a thermostat?

W/W1 and W2. In a conventional system, W/W1 controls your heating system and, where applicable, W2 controls your heating system’s second stage, which helps warm the home faster. If you have a heat pump system with auxiliary heating, you’ll normally connect the AUX/AUX1 or W2 wire to the ecobee’s W1 terminal.

What color is the Y wire on a thermostat?

yellow

Thermostat Wiring Tips

If your thermostat controls your heat, you will have a white wire. The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan. Rc and Rh: The red wire(s) are the power source for your thermostat.

What is the O B wire on a thermostat?

O, B, O/B: These wires are responsible for switching the changeover valve in a heat pump system. The O wire reverses the valve from heating to cooling, and the B wire switches the valve from cooling to heating.

What happens if you wire a thermostat wrong?

Potential consequences of improper installation could include: Electric shock. Blowing a circuit breaker. Damaging the thermostat unit, the electrical system or even the AC/furnace unit itself.

How do you identify thermostat wires?

Look for connectors that have labels that are the same as your thermostat. For instance, you might find labels like R, W, G, Y, C or O/B. You should find wires attached to these connectors that are the same color as the wires that connect to your thermostat.

Where does W2 wire go on Nest thermostat?

If you have a W2, Y2 or O/B wire, you can put it into the *O/B connector, if needed. Gently tug each wire to check they’re secure, and make sure each connector that has a wire stays down. Push the display onto the base until it clicks. Download the free Nest app so you can control your thermostat with your phone.

How do I test my HVAC wires?

Youtube quote:So we can actually take a voltage reading right now we'll turn this multimeter on 2 volts AC. We're going to turn the light on this is a UE IDL.

Is RC wire same as C wire?

No the Rc is the red wire. You need 5 wires or more for this to run with all the functions. You can use one of the other wires but you have to drop control of the fan. It will only come on when furnace comes on.

Can I use C wire for R?

Some thermostats simply have one wire labeled R. The power from the R wire isn’t continuous and that is where the C wire comes in. The C wire completes the circuit from the R wire back to the HVAC system’s control board.

Do I need a jumper from R to RC?

If you have a wire in the R terminal, and another wire (not a jumper) in the RC terminal, you will not need to connect the R and RC terminals. See our Basic Wiring article for more info here.
