Can you use galvanized nails on Hardie board?

Electro-galvanized nails are acceptable for use with James Hardie Siding Products, but may exhibit premature corrosion. James Hardie recommends the use of quality, hot-dipped galvanized nails.

Can I use a framing nailer for Hardie siding?
It’s possible to use a framing nailer to install siding since the nails are long enough to connect the siding firmly to the wood behind it.

Can you staple Hardie board?
There is a 1/2” crown on the 18-gauge coated stapler. Minimum 1-1/4” long roofing nails or ribbed countersink screws are required for HardieBacker 500 cement board. The chisel point stapler must be at least 7/8” long and coated in 18-gauge.
What do you use to fill nail holes in hardiplank?
The James Hardie company, makers of HardiePlank, recommends the use of a cement patch product made of an acrylic mortar compound for patching their siding products. Acrylic mortar compound can be found at most home improvement retailers and hardware stores under various brand and trade names.

Does it matter which side of Hardie board faces out?
Which side goes up, smooth or rough? Either is acceptable, but we recommend that the smooth side with the nailing pattern of every 8″ on center go up.
Do you have to tape seams on Hardibacker?
For tile backer boards such as Durock, Wonderboard, Hardiebacker, Permabase, and others the seams between the board need to be treated with 2-inch alkali-resistant mesh tape. Then a coat of thinset gets flat troweled over the seam. What this does is tie the two boards together and help prevent flexing.
Can I just screw down cement board?
Doing this will require that you remove the existing surface material before installing backer board over the studs. Cement board can also be used on countertops when laying tile. However, the process will involve using an extra sheet of backer board. Never use standard screws when installing cement board.
Do you have to use thinset under Hardie board?
Since you are putting down hardie board on boards with small gaps, I would not recommend trying to put down thinset under it. It will make an enormous mess under the house (or whatever is under your bathroom). It is also more likely to make the floor uneven since it is hard to level thinset that is separated by gaps.
Do I really need thinset under backer board?
Thinset is going to create a solid surface under tile and prevent flexing that could lead to cracking. Using thinset between the backerboard and subfloor will create additional strength, fill in any potential gaps that exist and lessen the possibility of movement.
