As long as there are both 12 gauge and 14 gauge grounds going back to the (same) electrical panel, that will be fine. The reason for this, is that if something shorts out, it will take the “path of least resistance” to ground.

Can you connect #14 wire to a #12?

14 AWG wire is rated for 15A of current. If the circuit is already on a 15A breaker then you can go ahead and swap any or all of the 12 AWG wiring for 14 AWG without any problems. 12 AWG wire is rated for 20A of current. If the circuit is currently on a 20A breaker then you can’t have 14 AWG wire in the circuit.

Does ground wire have to be same size as hot?

The ground wire is not always the same size as hotwire or neutral wire. It can be a size bigger or smaller than other wires. The bigger ground wire doesn’t do any harm to the system. It’ll only cost more to use a bigger ground wire.

Can you ground two ground wires together?

No you can’t.

Can you pigtail 14 gauge wire to 12 gauge wire?

Yes. It’s no problem as long as you can get a good twist on the wires.

What happens if ground wire is too small?

With too-small a ground wire, the breaker cannot magnetic-trip because it cannot flow enough current to hit 10x, because of the too-high resistance of the wire.

Can I use 14 gauge ground wire on 20 amp circuit?

14 AWG must be protected at 15A, according to NEC 240.4(D)(3). 14 AWG can’t be used on a circuit with a 20A breaker. The screw terminals are the better choice if you want to put 15 Amp receptacle on a 20 Amp circuit with 12 gauge wire.

Can you use two different gauge wires together?

It must be noted that while it is possible to splice different types of Romex wire—12/2 to 12/3, for instance—you should never splice together wires of a different gauge. Wire gauge is determined by the amount of amperage the wire is expected to carry.

Can you connect 12 gauge wire to 16 gauge wire?

Strip the 12 gauge wire extra long so it goes all the way through the butt connector with the tip extending just a bit out of the metal barrel. Then insert your 16 gauge wire into the other end so it’s side-by-side with the 12. That’ll give you the build you need for a good crimp.

Can you connect 10 gauge wire to 14 gauge wire?

It’s perfectly safe to use it. Don’t worry about confusing future workers. If they want to add something to the circuit, they will have to go turn off the circuit breaker first, and then they will see they are working with a 15 amp circuit.

Can I mix 12 and 10 gauge wire?

There is no problem at all connecting a 10 gauge wire to a 12 gauge wire. Make sure that the current in the wire does not exceed 120 volts. Use a 20 amp circuit protector to make sure that the connection is safe. The combination of different gauges is a perfectly safe and normal procedure.

Should I use 12 or 14 gauge wire?

12-gauge wire is the minimum requirement for outlets on a 20-amp circuit. 12-gauge wire can be used for outlets on both 15 and 20-amp circuits. 14-gauge wire is unsafe to use for outlets on a 20-amp circuit. 14-gauge wire can only be used for outlets on a 15-amp circuit.

How do you connect different gauge wires?

Use a butt splice (crimp connector) and make sure the wire is fully inserted. Take the larger gauge wire and slip a piece of heat shrink over it first before crimping it in the butt splice. Crimp both sides and heat shrink.

Can I connect 18 gauge wire to 16 gauge wire?

Yes the 16-gauge will work just fine. Make sure your connections are well insulated.

Is it OK to use a larger gauge wire?

Using larger gauge AWG wire offers you more flexibility in how your electrical system is laid out. Your electrician can add more outlets when your wiring has increased current potential. Larger wiring can sometimes be installed in risky areas where small wiring is not recommended.

How do you connect thick gauge wire?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: It's the set screw at will. So i'll still crimp it in there because they have a lot of give i still want to be snug. Okay it's snug. Great connection it's not going to come out it's not going to arc.

Are push connectors as good as wire nuts?

Wire nuts require proper wire stripping and splicing technique to ensure a good connection. On the other hand, push-in wire connectors are easier to install. Push-in wire connector types require no tools at all. Some other wire crimp connectors need a heat gun, a crimper, or both.

Can I splice 10 gauge wire?

Yes, you can (and should) splice the wires in a J-Box, routing a separate pigtail to each outlet. Be sure to use appropriately sized wire nuts and a box large enough for the operation…and the 10 gage wire which does not like to be bent in tiny spaces.
