TL:DR – No, don’t do it like that. The ring should be physically connected to earth at both ends, but this is potentially removing the continuity, which is unsafe.

Can you put 2 earth wires together?

If 2 earth wires go from the feed cables into the terminal on the back box you then only need one wire from the box to the socket. (even if the new socket has two earth terminals.

Why are there 2 Earths in a socket?

The reason your sockets have two earth terminals, is so as to provide high integrity earth terminations for use in circuits where high earth leakage currents are expected. There’s nothing to prevent you using such sockets for normal circuits, and just using one terminal.

Do you need to earth both sides of a double socket?

But yes you can just use the one as they are interconnected. All new double socket outlets have 2 earth terminals so that if the circuit is wired in a ring the earth connections can go separately.

How do I connect twin earth cable?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: Here make sure that the length is appropriate for the terminal. It's going into don't have any coppers are hanging out the back of the turn on the socket or whatever.

Can you put a plug on twin and earth?

It’s possible to fit 1.5²mm twin and earth into a 13A plug, such is the inginuity of the great unwashed. I’ve had this a few times! What about appliances that have a 2 core 2.5 cable either with a fitted or moulded plug from the manufacturers.

How does twin and earth cable work?

Twin and earth cable comprises two individually insulated current carrying conductors and an uninsulated circuit protective conductor. Twin and Earth cable is the most common cable used for domestic wiring today. The sheath is either grey (PVC) or white for low smoke cables (OHLS).

Does a plug socket need an earth?

There is no requirement to provide an Earth connection from a socket outlet, with an Earth connection, to the box. It’s not technicaly required by the regs providing it’s a modern socket front with continuity through one of the faceplate screws to the fixed lug in the back box.

Do metal sockets need earthing?

A metal back box for a socket would be classed as an exposed-conductive part and as such it needs to be earthed. If the back box has a fixed lug on one side then the answer is that it will become earthed via the mounting screws as the socket front is attached to the back box.

Does a plastic back box need earthing?

Plastic back boxes are insulators (not conductors), so don’t need to be earthed.

How do I join mains cables together?

Joining mains cables

The only way to safely join two flexible mains leads is with an in-line screw terminal connection box. This has a cable clamp at each end which must be used to clamp the outer insulation, not just the inner wires.

Can you crimp twin and earth?

Yes using crimps is considered just as good/safe as if there were no joint at all. The only thing you need to check, is whether the crimp is suitable to be used on solid conductors.

How can we straighten the earth and twin?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: So four fingers on the bottom thumb on the top hold it at the top with my arms out the way for the demonstration. And just drag against the actual board.

Can I use 2.5 mm flex cable for sockets?

2.5mm flex should not be used in a plug top,the maximum size flex should be 1.5mm.

Can I use 2.5 mm cable for sockets?

2.5mm is commonly used for behind sockets, while 1-1.5mm is most often used for lights (depending on how many lights you have in a circuit).

Can I use 4mm cable for sockets?

A good rule of thumb IME is that if the total length exceeds 100 meters, then consider use of 4mm. If the total cable length exceeds 120 meters, then definatly use 4mm.

Is 2.5 mm twin and earth OK for sockets?

2.5mm Twin and Earth is commonly used as indoor domestic cable. The most common use for this type of cable is for circuits that provide power to sockets.

What do you use 4mm twin and earth for?

4mm twin & earth is a triple insulated core which contains a bare earth, and a brown live and a blue neutral sheathed conductor. It is commonly used for indoor domestic wiring projects including lighting, low supply hobs and cookers where an increased amount of power is required.

Can you connect 6mm cable to 2.5 mm cable?

Provided that the circuit is RCD protected, the connector blocks fully enclosed and that a Minor Electrical Works Certificate has been issued with the test results for the circuit, then yes this is acceptable.

Can you mix cable sizes?

Yes, mixed cable sizes are fine provided that the smallest cable is compliant for the size and type of OCPD. AND that the voltage drop for the entire circuit is within acceptable limits.

Can I put a socket on a 6mm cable?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using 6mm cable for a socket circuit and it is possible that it could be required, cable size is simply dictated by the load to be put on the circuit, the voltage drop of the cable, the protective device (fuse/mcb) on the circuit and finally the cable run.
