In general, yes, it’s fine.

Can I use multiple layers of foam board insulation?

When two or more layers of polyiso insulation boards are used together to provide the specified insulation thickness for a commercial roof, you dramatically minimize thermal bridging. In order to create the most energy efficient installation, the joints of the polyiso insulation boards should be offset.

Can you put siding over Styrofoam?

Installing a layer of foam will improve the R-value and improve air tightness when sealed. Fastening of siding can be tricky. You can install vinyl siding directly over foam as long as your nails extend through it and attach firmly to a solid nail base.

Does rigid foam insulation need a vapor barrier?

Foam insulation usually does not require a vapor barrier. For some foam insulation types, such as closed-cell spray foam and foam board insulation, the insulation itself stops the movement of most water vapor.

Does rigid foam need to be covered?

Rigid foam insulation, whether it is expanded or extruded polystyrene, does have to be covered if it is installed in the interior of a building. This wall covering must have a minimum fire rating to protect the insulation from quick combustion during a fire.

Can you leave rigid foam board insulation exposed?

Tests have shown that these laminated boards can withstand UV ray damage for a reasonably long time. That said, it’s still advisable to cover any foam board insulation exposed to the Sun within 30-60 days at the most. On most projects, that’s more than enough time to finish the exterior walls.

How do you install siding over rigid foam insulation?

Quote from Youtube video: Space the fasteners a minimum of 24 inches apart along studs whenever possible use a utility knife and straightedge to trim the boards to conform to any irregular angles or projections.

Do you put Tyvek over insulation board?

DuPont™ Tyvek® wraps can be installed UNDER or OVER exterior foam insulation. The DuPont™ Tyvek® wrap should be installed on the same plane as the window flanges to allow for the most effective installation.

How long can XPS be exposed?

60 days

If FOAMULAR® insulation is not covered immediately, it is recommended that it be covered within 60 days. When exposed for up to 60 days, gradual color fading and/or dusting of the surface may occur. Fading or color loss, while noticeable, will not affect the performance of FOAMULAR® XPS insulation.

Does rigid foam mold?

Quote from the video:
Quote from Youtube video: Now most of our foams have a D mold time or will achieve handling strength in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Can rigid foam insulation get wet?

Because of its resistance to moisture, foam board insulation is a great choice whenever and wherever there is a chance it could get wet, such as: an exterior foundation, inside a basement against the foundation, and on the outside of a house beneath a house wrap.

Which side of foam board insulation faces out?

If you’re wondering whether to put the foil side of foam insulation board shiny side in or out, consider whether you want to make the space inside warmer or cooler. If you want to make the space warmer, the foil should face inside so it can reflect radiant heat back into the room.

What is the best insulation to prevent mold?

Fiberglass insulation

Fiberglass insulation without backing may be the best choice. Cellulose insulation is constructed of ground paper, which is an ideal food source for the growth of mold if it becomes wet. Cellulose should only be used when it’s absolutely certain it will not get wet.

Will foam insulation grow mold?

Foam building insulation, in both spray foam and foam board products, is resistant to mold growth but as we will explain here it is not absolutely mold-roof, and on occasion we do find mold growth on the surface of even closed-cell foam, in open-celled foam (rare), and on th surface of EPS and other foam insulating

Can exterior foam insulation cause mold and moisture problems?

The benefit of foam insulation in the exterior wall when it comes to moisture is it doesn’t provide a favorable material for mold to grow in and most foam products contain no food value for mold. Foam insulation also creates a needed air seal that will keep your home comfortable and energy-efficient.
