Can TJI joists be notched?

Notch will only be allowed in a TJI joist member of one ply. TJI product can only have one notch per joist member. Notch will only be analyzed when the length parallel to the joist member span does not exceed 4 inches.

Can you notch the top of an I joist?

One rule of thumb is to provide twice the distance between holes as the diameter of the largest hole. Also, notching the top of a joist weakens it less than notching the bottom, and you should avoid locating holes (and notches) near loose knots.

In order to ensure that you are not compromising the structural integrity of any joist you must ensure that any notches and holes made in them are in safe areas. Making holes outside these areas will seriously weaken the joists and they could become dangerous.

How do you strengthen a notched joist?

You can reinforce a notched joist that has not cracked by cutting two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood as wide as the joist depth and as long as the plywood sheet. Screwing a piece to the joist on each side offers moderate reinforcement. Stronger reinforcement is in order if the joist is sagging or has cracked.

Can you notch the underside of a joist?
