It’s a paste that usually contains PTFE (teflon) and doesn’t harden over time. It seals a hell of a lot better than teflon tape does, and arguably is a better lubricant as well. It’s also easier to use IMHO, you simply smear it all over the male end with the little brush that comes in the can.
