Can you tile over RedGard waterproofing?





Can You Tile Directly Onto RedGard? There’s no need to put another layer of product on top of RedGard before you begin tiling. A surface that has been painted with RedGard and allowed to dry is ready for you to apply thinset and install tile. You can install thinset mortar and tile directly onto RedGard.

Can you RedGard on cement board?

If you can paint a wall you can use RedGard. And for this shower, we only needed one gallon. There are two ways to get RedGard on cement board panels: Roll it on the wall with a 3/4 inch nap roller.

How long after applying RedGard can you tile?





Allow the RedGard membrane to cure for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The color will turn from pink to a solid red sheet with no pink spots when it is fully dry. It is most important that you wait for the color of the product to turn completely red as ambient conditions will make the dry time vary.

Can you apply RedGard to drywall?

How long does RedGard take to cure?

The product is dry when it turns solid red with no pink showing, normally 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Depending on ambient conditions, drying time can take up to 12 hours. A water test can be conducted 72 hours after application if required.

Do I need to seal cement board before tiling?



Although most backerboards currently available won’t fall apart when exposed to moisture and are somewhat water-resistant, they aren’t waterproof. To prevent moisture from seeping through to the wood or metal studs beneath the tile, a barrier or sealant must be used on porous materials.

Is RedGard a vapor barrier?

You must also tape the backerboard seams with fiberglass mesh drywall tape. The easiest way I have found to install Redgard is, after the walls are prepped properly, start with a paint brush and thoroughly coat all the corners and angles.

How thick should RedGard be?

Combined dried coatings must be at least 30-35 mils thick. When wet, the combined coatings must be at least 60-70 mils and must not exceed 125 mils wet-film thickness. RedGard® is dry when it turns solid red, with no visible pink color.

Can you use mesh tape with RedGard?

A: The RedGard Seam Tape for Uncoupling Mat Underlayment is incompatible with our RedGard Waterproofing and Crack Prevention Membrane. We would recommend reinforcing the corners by embedding alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape.

How long should mud bed cure before Redgard?



All surfaces must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from contaminants that would prevent a good bond. Newly prepared concrete must be troweled smooth and textured to a fine broom finish and cured for 24 hours.
