First Kerdi can be installed on drywall or cement board. However if installed on drywall it is only protecting one side. The back side of the drywall fails and it is just as bad or worse than if it had an issue on the tile side. All shower/tub areas should have concrete board (I prefer hardiboard).

What is better KERDI-BOARD or cement board?

Cement Board can withstand a certain amount of water. This is why when you look at Cement Board, it is considered to be water-resistant yet not waterproof. Kerdi Board, however, does really well with water and it can handle getting quite wet. Many people will even use Kerdi Board when they are doing waterproofing.

Do I need cement board for shower walls?



Shower walls must be backed with a waterproof backing board. Drywall is not an acceptable backer board. Even moisture-resistant drywall (green or blue varieties) will not hold up in showers. Use a true cement backer board, or try a shower backer board kit like this one.
