Most room thermostats on heating and cooling systems receive their 24V AC electrical power from a low voltage transformer that itself is usually found at the boiler or furnace (blue arrow in our photo at left).

How much current does a thermostat use?

The thermostat wire isn’t sized for carrying capacity. The code requires the circuit to be Class 2, 30 volts and 100 VA maximum, with no more than 4 Amps. Most of the capacity may be required for the relays in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning unit.

Are thermostats 24V AC or DC?





The most common type of voltage from a central heating and/or cooling system is 24 volts (24Vac). The old thermostat may say somewhere on the thermostat that it is for 24 volt (24Vac) or maximum 30 volts (30Vac). If you see 120 Vac or 240 Vac on the thermostat, a low voltage thermostat will NOT work with your system.

Is thermostat C wire AC or DC?

The c in c-wire stands for common. The purpose of the thermostat c-wire is to provide continuous 24-volt AC power, known as 24VAC, to the thermostat. And the purpose of having continuous power is to get a constant, accurate thermostat reading.

Is 24VAC the same as 12VDC?

24VAC can run longer distances than 12VDC. It isn’t because of the alternating current, but because of the 24V. To supply 24 Watts will require 1 amp at 24VAC and 2 amps at 12V. The voltage drop in a wire is proportional the amps only.

Can I use 24VAC instead of 24VDC?

Can you touch 24V AC?



As noted in the first article in this series (see HPAC March 2018, Who Let the Smoke Out) 24VAC is much safer to handle than 120VAC. If you touch 24VAC with your bare hands you won’t get shocked, it is possible if your hands were wet but it is very hard for 24VAC to travel through skin because it is a low voltage.

Is 24VAC considered low voltage?

Low voltage is defined as 50 volts (V) or less. Common low voltages are 12V, 24V, and 48V. Low voltage is normally used for doorbells, garage door opener controls, heating and cooling thermostats, alarm system sensors and controls, outdoor ground lighting, household and automobile batteries.

Can 24VAC hurt you?

It is perhaps worth noting that 12/24V DC is just as deadly as 120/240V AC. There’s naught deadly in voltage, it’s the wattage that electrocutes you. A static shock is 6kV, as I recall, but the amperage is low enough that it doesn’t hurt at all.
